Major Arcana XII — Tarot of Marseille
The Hanged Man
Meaning of the card: general sense, love, career, money and health.
General Meaning
The Hanged Man observes the world upside down. In this voluntary suspension, he discovers a new perspective and accepts sacrifice as a path to higher wisdom.
Hanging by one foot between two pruned trees, head down, The Hanged Man does not struggle. His face is peaceful, his hands hidden behind his back, his free leg bent with strange elegance. He does not suffer his position: he consents to it. From his inverted posture he sees what no one else sees — the world upside down, which may be right side up.
In a reading, this card announces a period of suspension: things are not moving, and this is not the time to force them. It invites letting go, freely accepted sacrifice, the shift in perspective that unties what action cannot resolve. This pause often prepares a decisive understanding. Its shadow: complacent passivity, playing the victim, useless sacrifice. The Hanged Man's question: what must you agree to release in order to be freed?
