The Devil

General Meaning
The Devil holds his captives by chains they could break. He reveals the traps of uncontrolled desires and dependencies that obscure true freedom.
On his pedestal, The Devil brandishes a torch, half-man half-beast, bat wings spread. At his feet, two small figures are chained — but the ropes hang loose around their necks: they could leave. They stay. That is this card's whole secret: the chains that hold us are often the ones we choose to wear.
In a reading, The Devil speaks of passions, desire, ambition, money, sexuality — all the powerful, murky energies that drive us forward or enslave us.
