General Meaning
The Magician is master of beginnings. Skillful and determined, he juggles all available resources to manifest his will in the world.
At his table, The Magician lays out the emblems of the tarot's four suits: the coin, the cup, the sword, and the wand he holds in his hand. Young, alert, wearing a hat whose brim traces the symbol of infinity, he is the first numbered arcana — the number 1, the absolute beginning. Everything is laid out before him; nothing is yet accomplished. He owns the tools; it remains for him to use them.
This card announces a beginning: a new project, a new job, a new relationship, a new stage of life. It speaks of skill, practical intelligence, and an ease in communicating and persuading. The Magician succeeds through flexibility and ingenuity rather than force. His shadow: scattering, bluffing, talent wasted for lack of perseverance.
